Words Matter

We all see the posts about proper spelling and proper grammar, but how often do we see articles about choosing your words carefully? Think about it, how many times have you seen something scroll across your newsfeed and you have the urge to post some funny comment. Most times it is harmless, but every so often what you thought was funny someone will take offense to. This doesn’t just apply to your standard comments either. Just the other day I saw a contact share a blog posting that had a title that totally turned me off. It could have been the best most eloquently written article in the world, but because of the title, I had no interest in reading it. Granted sometimes we go for the shock factor, but know when you are looking to shock and how to get that across in your title. Here are a few things to think about when you use any sort of social media platform: 1. Chose your article/blog titles carefully If you don’t want to turn off your target audience make sure you really think about your title. 2. Don’t use Social Media as your sounding board We don’t care that someone wronged you. We do care about how you learned from the situation and what words of wisdom you can share with us. 3. Think before you post Think about how you would react to the comment you are about to post. If you are writing about a recent situation, think about how the other party would react if they read it. 5 Tips for Busting Through Writers Block

Writers block can be the worst when you’re trying to keep a regular content posting schedule. Not only are you under the gun to write, you’re also trying to come up with useful information for your readers. On top of that, there are rules you must follow, proper punctuation, proper voice. Sometimes all of this can take the fun out of writing. I am no different than anyone else, it’s a struggle to come up with content for my blog. That made me think, what DO I do to bust through writers block? After pondering for a bit, I put together this list, I hope it helps you! 1) Brain Dump That’s right. Just pull out a pen (or sit at the computer) and start writing anything that comes to mind. I get everything out of my head that may even remotely be interesting to you. Generally I use the application Evernote, I start a new note and I brain dump. Not every idea is a good idea, but I find that once I start typing, the inspiration flows. 2) Listen to music Several years ago, I was part of a blogging challenge, we were challenged to find a song and use it as inspiration for a blog. That was an excellent way to break through writers block. The best tip anyone can give you, is to know your audience.   How do you find your audience? Know your customers.    With Social Media becoming more and more relevant in marketing efforts, it is super important you know who your ideal client is and how to talk to them on social media.   If your ideal customer is a stay at home mother who enjoys crafts, then you might want to make sure you create all your messaging towards her. You would talk about family, special decorations for birthdays, or share a neat DIY (do-it-yourself) project. You would not want to talk about the cool new car that just came out on the market or the vacation you took to Las Vegas, because, well those topics might not interest your potential clients.   Remember Social Media is like a Ginormous networking event. When attending a networking event, you get to know others, build trust, and then sell. You never walk into a networking event with a huge sign over your head that says “Buy my Stuff” or walk up to someone you first met and say “This widget would be great for your car.” How do you know they need your widget? 4 Newsletter Tips

 If you are like me then you have been receiving a lot of newsletters lately and are finding your inbox to be cluttered with things that you will never read. We are all told – get a newsletter, get subscribers, and send it out, but how do you avoid becoming that clutter we all hate? Here is a short list of suggestions I have for you to help your newsletter have less noise and more valuable information for your readers. 1. The 9 second rule I have to admit, I am making this name up, but it is based on the fact that societies attention span is getting less and less. The average attention span is shorter than that of a goldfish. This means you have to get your readers attention quick, and if you can’t do that in 9 seconds, then you won’t have readers. How do you combat the short attention span? Create a title what will catch their attention. Make the first sentence of your newsletter or article interesting.  2. Create interesting content I don’t have much to say about this tip, as the title says it all. Make sure what you are writing about is interesting to the people who are reading it. Make sure you grab your audience and you keep their attention. I find short paragraphs are best, but your content will dictate what works best for you. 3. Did I get your attention? Well good! And yes I meant it! See the thing is, I watch so many people go into a networking event expecting to get a sale and every time they walk away disappointed. Very rarely have I seen someone walk into networking event for the first time and actually walk out with a sale. Don’t get me wrong, I have seen businesses thrive after joining a networking group and I have closed sales based on meeting someone at a networking event. But to walk in and expect a sale right off the bat, is not how business networking works. So how does it work? If I can’t walk into an event and expect to close a sale then how do I get business from these groups? Glad you asked! Networking is about developing relationships. Bob Berg wrote in Endless Referrals (which I highly recommend reading) “people do business with, and refer business to, people they know like and trust.” Networking events give you the means to meet people whom you might end up liking and ultimately trusting, thus ending in business and referrals. I have been networking for most of my professional life. The first time around, I went to the events gave my 30 sec pitch gabbed with a few people and left. It was great for making friends, but did nothing for my business. Why? Because although they knew me and they liked me, they had nothing to go off of when it came to trusting me.
